As an educator Barnaby Lickens-Richards is preoccupied with the development of the illustrator’s applied voice and exploring the relationship between pictures and words.
Barnaby’s current research looks at how we experience and articulate acts of the imagination. Especially, how the imagination functions within domestic and private settings. In the field of autoethnography using comics, images and site specific objects to explore and articulate this concern. Foregrounding how illustration can function outside of traditional commercial consumption values and to frame the discipline as a repository for shared and collective memory.
Barnaby gained a wealth of experience working as a practicing illustrator for over twenty years; working in the fields of publishing, editorial, applied products, and small press comics. His clients include: Anorak Magazine, The Guardian G2, The Guardian Sport, The Independent, The Independent on Sunday, The Observer on Sunday Magazine, The Financial Times, Paul Smith Jeans, Playstation, Reader’s Digest Magazine, Walker Books, The Big Tomato Company, and Dankai Punch.
