Location: Highly Flammable Studio, Shrewsbury, UK
Date(s):4 August 2023

ARTIST STATEMENT:

In my artistic journey, I’ve traversed a diverse landscape of roles, each contributing to the rich tapestry of my practice and vision as an artist. While sustainability and its myriad interpretations have been integral to my work, my artistic identity extends far beyond this theme.

Inspiration often emerges from the world of fashion, infusing my practice with elements of wearable art. This fascination with fashion serves as a bridge between traditional artistic forms and contemporary culture. Exploring wearable art has allowed me to create pieces that transcend gallery walls and become integrated into daily life, fostering a deeper connection between art and society.

Mixed media has emerged as a cornerstone of my artistic expression. By embracing the fusion of various materials and mediums, I’ve shattered the confines of conventional artistic norms. This approach allows me to craft multidimensional artworks that challenge perceptions and encourage viewers to engage on multiple sensory levels.

Another facet of my journey involves the dynamic world of film. Film has provided a captivating platform for storytelling, emotional exploration, and immersive audience engagement. Incorporating this medium into my practice has expanded my role as a visual storyteller and filmmaker, enabling me to convey narratives and ideas in innovative ways.

In my artistic voyage, color has evolved beyond a mere aesthetic choice. It has become a powerful tool for addressing emotional, social, and political sustainability. Through a diverse and vibrant color palette, I navigate critical issues, advocate for change, and spark essential conversations within my community.

Subject matter holds profound significance in my evolving practice. By portraying powerful figures, particularly women, my art becomes a means of contributing to ongoing dialogues about equality, empowerment, and social justice. The choice of subjects extends my role as an advocate for positive change.

Materials, too, have taken on new layers of meaning. They can symbolize resilience, interconnectedness, or complexity, reflecting the intricate roles that artists play within their communities.

Artists are not just creators; we are also catalysts for change. We function as advocates, innovators, and storytellers, all working toward a more harmonious and sustainable world. My artistic path encompasses this broader view of sustainability, one that embraces environmental consciousness while also addressing social, cultural, and political dimensions.

As I continue to evolve as an artist, I am committed to celebrating and embracing the multifaceted roles I play within my community. Through my art, I aim to inspire, provoke thought, and contribute to the betterment of society, whether through traditional mediums, innovative forms like wearable art and film, or the powerful language of colour and subject matter.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT:

“How can multimedia art practice capture the multifaceted roles that an artist embodies within the community?” This research question is the cornerstone of my project, “The Roles of an Artist within the Community,” set against the backdrop of Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Within this exploration, I delve into the intricate relationship between artists and their local communities, culminating in a captivating magazine that adeptly encapsulates the diverse roles artists assume within their community.

Guided by experimental film techniques displayed in Camille Henrot’s “Grosse Fatigue,” I embarked on an immersive journey into the world of multimedia art. I was further inspired by artists like Victoria Adam, who emphasizes the importance of drawing people into their intimacy, pushing me to experiment with vibrant and translucent substances. This dynamic interplay between artistic influences and the urban landscape established the bedrock of my project.

The essence of this artistic journey lies in the evolution of mixed media artwork and photography, which subsequently metamorphosed into a distinct magazine. Each page of the magazine serves as a testament to a specific role that artists undertake within the community. From hosts to communicators, creators to performers, these roles intricately interweave into the very fabric of my project.

My exploration extends beyond art to encompass the broader social implications of an artist’s role within a community. The magazine, accompanied by its complementary films, transcends mere depiction and mirrors the collective consciousness of the community. Through poetry, visual art, and experimental film, I endeavor to choreograph a delicate dance between art and its audience—the public. Rooted in the ethos of pop-up art culture, I transpose my creative process into local public spaces, mirroring the transient yet captivating nature of contemporary art.

The culmination of this project manifested as a live event held at Highly Flammable Studios. Seamlessly interweaving visual art, experimental film, and immersive soundscapes, this event encapsulated the audience in a mesmerizing journey through the various roles artists undertake within their community. It was a celebration of experimental film movements, blending nostalgia with contemporary artistic innovation.

My project’s essence lies in the symbiotic relationship between artists and their communities. By unearthing diverse artistic roles, I aspire to unravel the threads that intricately bind artists and audiences. Anchored in the local environment and powered by collaborations with business owners and creatives such as Rebecca Rawlins, Hope Gwilliam, and Shannon Ward, my project stands as a testament to holistic community engagement. The ingenuity of Highly Flammable Studio, designed to “invite and inspire other creatives,” plays an instrumental role in fostering empowerment and sustainable community regeneration. Contributions from Shannon Ward streamlined practical filming aspects, cementing the execution of my project.

Ultimately, my exploration delves into the multifaceted dimensions of artists’ roles within the community. Guided by a central research question, it uncovers the intricate interplay between art, community, and identity. Through collaboration, experimentation, and a profound connection to the community, my project unfurls the rich tapestry of artists’ roles within Shrewsbury’s vibrant canvas.
